The EU has adopted a certification framework for carbon removals (CRCF). Buyers and auditors are asking for measured, not modelled, forest numbers, and Nordic states already publish national laser-scan forest data for free.
Approach · context and knowledge
The words behind the numbers.
Context for why measurement matters now, and a plain-language glossary of the terms you will meet in our reports.
Why now
The gap
Forest carbon has a trust problem: projects promise future removals, verification comes late, and uncertainty is rarely shown. Cooperatives sit on member data they cannot easily turn into reports.
Our bet
A small, open measurement layer: national laser data in, portfolio stock and change out, every number with a source, a date and a test. Useful as a data service before any regulator signs off on a method.
Glossary
- SR16
- NIBIO's national forest resource map for Norway, derived from airborne laser scanning and field plots. Open under NLOD 2.0.
- Airborne laser scanning (ALS)
- Lidar flown from aircraft. Measures canopy height and density, from which volume and biomass are modelled.
- Stock
- The carbon held in the forest at one point in time, derived from stem volume, wood density and expansion factors.
- Stock change
- The difference between two measurements of stock. Only meaningful when it is larger than the measurement error.
- Uncertainty range
- The interval the true value most likely falls in. We show it with every figure, never a bare point value.
- RMSE
- Root mean square error: the typical size of an estimate's error, used to build uncertainty ranges.
- Minimum detectable change
- The smallest stock change a portfolio can prove given its error. Below it, our report refuses to print a number.
- CRCF
- The EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming certification framework. Not yet incorporated into the EEA Agreement for Norway.
- Additionality
- Whether a removal would have happened anyway. Hard to prove for managed forest; we do not claim it.
- Permanence
- How long stored carbon stays stored. Forest carbon can be reversed by harvest, fire, storm or pests.
- Continuous cover forestry (CCF)
- Harvesting without clear-cuts. On mineral soils the evidence does not show an automatic carbon gain.
- Drained peatland forest
- Forest on drained peat soils, which can emit carbon. Rewetting is where a carbon case is clearest.
- LULUCF
- Land use, land-use change and forestry: the sector in national greenhouse gas inventories that includes forests.
- MRV
- Measurement, reporting and verification: the evidence chain behind any climate claim.
- NLOD
- Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data. Allows reuse with attribution.
